A West Ashley pool hall is under new ownership.
Players Place Billiards & Sports Pub, located on Ashley River Rd next to Summit Adventure Park, is now owned by Michelle VanAllen. According to documents submitted to the City of Charleston, the business is planning to operate under a new name: Smitty’s Place. Smitty’s Place is the name of another North Charleston pool hall, which appears to also be tied to VanAllen.
As required by local law, the new owner must reapply for a zoning exception that permitted the original business to operate past midnight, due to its proximity to residential properties. VanAllen’s application includes over 150 signatures of support from regular patrons of the bar.
Although it will have a new name, it appears the popular local hangout will continue to offer the same billiards tournaments, charity events, and classic bar menu. A food menu included in the zoning request shows finger foods like mozarella sticks and fried pickles, salads, wings, and a wide variety of burgers and wraps. Besides pool, guests can enjoy a game of cornhole or even axe throwing.
The zoning request for Smitty’s will be reviewed at a December 5 meeting of the Zoning Board.
