The D.C.-based Makan is opening a second location in Lowcountry at the site of the former Goulette Rotisserie and Grill at 210 Rutledge Ave. Helmed by South Carolina native James Wozniuk, the restaurant will serve Malaysian cuisine out of the 2,350-square-foot downtown space.

Makan’s menu includes traditional Malaysian offerings like Nasi Kunyit (turmeric rice) and a Ramly burger (a smash-burger wrapped in an omelet topped with sweet chili sauce).

Chef Wozniuk has earned many recognitions and accolades, including Michelin guide (with a Bib Gourmand for both Maketto and Spoken English) and The Rammys. “I grew up in South Carolina, have family in Charleston, and have always loved the city’s warmth, beauty, and history. The last few years it has become such a versatile food city full of people who just love trying new things and having a good time,” Wozniuk said in an interview with Eater earlier this year.

While a timeline for the opening has not been set, Wozniuk has and will continue to host pop ups throughout Charleston in anticipation of the Charleston outpost.

Wozniuk could not be immediately reached for comment.
